Emergency Temporary Protection
The first priority after storm damage is making the roof watertight. We apply heavy-duty protective tarpaulins correctly secured to prevent further wind damage, carry out emergency patch repairs where practical, and stabilise any loose elements that are at risk of falling and causing injury or further damage. We document everything photographically for your insurance claim.
Missing and Displaced Tiles
Wind pressure lifts tiles at the tail end where the fixing is weakest — on roofs where tiles are not mechanically fixed, or where fixings have corroded, tiles can be ripped off completely. We replace missing tiles like-for-like, ensure adjacent tiles are re-seated and checked, and add mechanical fixings where current standards under BS 5534:2014 require them. Where a large number of tiles have blown, a partial or full re-tile may be required.
Ridge and Hip Tile Repairs
Ridge tiles are one of the most common storm damage failures on Staffordshire properties. Mortar bedding cracks and fails over time, leaving ridge tiles held only by gravity and friction. High winds rock them loose and they can slide off entirely — often onto the roof below or falling to the ground. We re-bed and re-point displaced ridge tiles or install dry-fix mechanical ridge systems that eliminate this failure mode entirely.
Blown Lead Flashing
Lead flashings at chimney stacks and wall abutments can be lifted and displaced by high winds, particularly where the chase has opened up or the fixing clips have failed. Blown flashing leaves the junction between the roof covering and the wall completely open to water. We re-dress or replace displaced flashing to BS 6915:2016 as part of the storm damage repair, cutting new chases and pinning correctly where the original detail was inadequate.
Chimney Stack Damage
Chimney stacks are the most exposed element of a roof and suffer disproportionate storm damage. Chimney pots blown off, coping stones displaced, brickwork cracked by impact from fallen debris, and mortar joints opened up by repeated movement are all common after severe storms. Slipped and Broken Slates
Slate roofs on older Staffordshire properties are particularly vulnerable in storms where nail sickness has already weakened the fixings. Wind uplift causes slates to slip and fall, exposing the sarking felt beneath. We carry out emergency temporary repairs immediately and then properly re-fix or replace slates to BS 5534:2014 specification. Where nail sickness is widespread, we advise on the most cost-effective approach to the wider roof.
Fascias, Soffits and Guttering
High winds and falling branches regularly damage fascia boards, soffits, and guttering. Broken guttering brackets cause sections to drop and pull away from the fascia, UPVC fascias crack and split under impact, and soffit panels are blown out entirely in severe gusts. Insurance Reports and Documentation
We provide a detailed written report of all storm damage identified, photographic evidence of the condition of the roof, and a formal written repair quotation that your insurer and loss adjuster can use to assess your claim.
